Safelite fixes your windshield AND manages your insurance claim. In March 2025 they paid $31 million to settle whistleblower suits over how they billed insurers.
What They Did
- Belron (majority-owned by Belgium's D'Ieteren Group) acquired Safelite in March 2007, creating the world's largest vehicle glass company operating in 41 countries
- Clayton Dubilier & Rice bought a 40% stake in Belron in 2018, later selling portions to Hellman & Friedman, GIC, and BlackRock in a deal valuing Belron at a staggering €21 billion
- Safelite Solutions acts as third-party claims administrator for most major insurers — meaning the same company that profits from replacing your glass also decides who gets to replace it
- Paid $31 million in March 2025 to settle whistleblower fraud suits in California ($22.3 million) and Illinois ($8.7 million) — the suits alleged Safelite billed insurers for premium molding parts while installing cheaper universal ones, and charged for COVID-era 'sanitization' that was never performed
Since the Acquisition
- Your insurer's app routes the glass claim through Safelite's own claims arm, which an NBC Connecticut investigation found steers drivers to Safelite shops even when they ask for an independent one
- You can book an OEM windshield and still end up with cheaper aftermarket glass that may not pass your car's safety-camera calibration
