NOT PRIVATE EQUITY OWNED
Buc-ee's
Includes Buc-ees, Bucees
convenience store · Lake Jackson, TX
Founder-owned, beaver-branded, and PE-free since 1982.
Why It’s Different
- Co-founders Arch "Beaver" Aplin III and Don Wasek built Buc-ee's without outside investors. Texas Monthly reported in 2019 that the two owned it 50-50, a 2026 Texas A&M profile still calls Wasek Aplin's business partner, and no sale or outside investment has been reported since
- Aplin opened the first store in Lake Jackson on July 28, 1982, and Wasek, another local convenience-store owner, partnered with him for the second
- They paid for the growth with bank loans instead of selling a piece of the company to outside investors, so no private equity firm got a seat at the table
- Why people keep asking: the first Buc-ee's outside Texas opened in Alabama in January 2019, and by mid-2024 there were stores in eight more states. That's the kind of sprint people assume a buyout firm is bankrolling. The founders who started it in Brazoria County still run it
