PE backed a color-organized accessories chain, fueled over-expansion, and then every single one of the 261 stores closed forever.
What Happened
- TSG Consumer Partners and Hancock Park Associates backed Charming Charlie's rapid expansion from a small Texas chain to nearly 400 stores at its peak
- Filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December 2017, then filed again in July 2019. That second filing led to complete liquidation.
- All 261 stores closed permanently by August 2019, and the brand's intellectual property sold at auction for just $1.1 million — to a real estate firm owned by Charming Charlie's own founder
- The PE growth strategy of expanding fast and piling on debt while waiting for revenue to catch up collapsed once mall traffic declined
The Damage Done
- 261 stores closed across the country, eliminating a unique, color-organized shopping experience that had a devoted following among budget-conscious women
- Employees across all locations lost their jobs with minimal notice as the second bankruptcy moved straight to liquidation
- Customers held $19.8 million in unspent gift cards that stores stopped honoring 30 days into the closeout, and the relaunched brand still won't redeem the old ones
- Charming Charlie showed that PE-driven over-expansion can sink even a beloved, one-of-a-kind retail brand.
